PBOTD 6th December: Jean Slaughter Doty - Winter Pony

I know I did do this book in last year's Advent Calendar, but I love it, so here it is again. It's the sequel to Summer Pony, and in it Ginny teaches Mokey to pull a sleigh. This book was illustrated by the excellent American artist Ted Lewin, and the illustrations are right up there amongst my favourite equine illustrations ever. Ted Lewin painted horses and people with equal brilliance. I've included one of the illustrations below.

The reprint version sadly has lost these illustrations, as well as the more complex elements of the text, so bear that in mind if you want a copy of the book.

Ted Lewin works up his illustrations from photographs, and then under drawings which are painted over. He wanted to be an illustrator from a very early age, and went to the Pratt Institute to study. He had a novel way of funding his studies: he was a professional wrestler. Thankfully, he didn't injure his hands or arms.
